Fring Two Way Calling From Android

Here's what the quality is like. Sometimes it's echo-y, and sometimes when there's too much motion it gets pixelated to hell, but it's two-way video calling for free. How can you not get excited about that?

Fring doesn't care whether you're in vertical or horizontal orientation, leaving it up to you and your partner to pick one and stick with it. Switching back and forth means your buddy will have to turn his phone to compensate, which changes the orientation of his video too. And it only really works well with an Android phone with a front camera, like the Sprint HTC EVO we tried this on.

This is cool I am going to go download it and see how it works. My camera however is on the back of my phone.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, a.k.a. drones, are not a new enterprise — they've been flying in military applications for years, and have become integral parts of both Air Force and Navy arsenals and key tools in ground-troop operations. Everyone knows the big bad Predator drones that fly mission in the war zones and have the capability to destroy targets remotely, but those require nearly as ground support as a regular manned aircraft. This is really cool and kind of scary how good the Drones are getting. Many more things are turning into Drones to save human lives instead.

Invisable Sharks

As if they weren't scary enough, scientists have discovered that sharks can become invisible to prey/you using an optical trick. Not scared yet? Well, one of the invisible shark species is nicknamed the phantom hunter of the fjords. Run. Now.

The real name of the phantom hunter is Etmopterus spinax, or velvet belly lantern shark, which lives in the deep waters of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, the shark becomes invisible by regulating the photophores underneath its body. This makes their belly glow matching the light of the sun above them, as filtered by the sea. As a result, preys or predators looking from under them are not able to see them.

Fortunately, not all sharks can turn invisible: Only ten percent of the sharks can use this trick.

This is so crazy! Sharks that can go almost invisible in deep waters that is crazy!

It's the Cheonan, a South Korean Pohang-class corvette that broke in two on March 26. According to an international investigation, the cause was a torpedo fired from a North Korean Yeono class miniature submarine, killing 46 crew members. A few weeks later, on April 15, the South Korean Navy recovered the stern part from the bottom of the sea using a giant floating crane. On April 24, the bow was recovered.

This is a pretty crazy story because the ship must weight thousands of tons!

Possible 3D laptop

We're not sure there are any PC makers not working on 3D-enabled desktops and laptops at this point, but it looks like we can now add two more to the watch list: Fujitsu and Lenovo. Of the two, Fujitsu is by far the most forthcoming, as it's actually now showing off an all-in-one desktop PC that not only packs a 3D LCD, but a built-in 3D camera that will let you capture 3D images and video that can be viewed with the included 3D glasses.

A 3D Laptop would be really cool. I don't know how much I would really need it, but it is a cool concept.

Panasonic's 50 inch TV

It's a 50-inch, 1080p plasma that excels as an HDTV, delivering great quality images -- even with SD content.

Android ousts iPhone OS for second place in US market

"We're number two" might not be the chant everyone's after, but we have a feeling that Google is more than satisfied with that in this case... for now. According to market research firm NPD, Google's Android operating system edged up into second place in the US smartphone market during the first quarter of the year, leaving it still well behind RIM's BlackBerry OS, but marking the first time that it has moved ahead of Apple's iPhone OS. Specifically, NPD found that RIM maintained a strong 36 percent market share for the quarter, with Android coming in at 28 percent, and iPhone OS in third at 21 percent. The growth for Android was attributed largely to strong carrier support -- like Verizon's buy-one-get-one free offer which, incidentally, also helped Verizon maintain a 30 percent smartphone market share, which is just slightly behind AT&T at 32 percent, and ahead of T-Mobile and Sprint at 17 and 15 percent, respectively.

I found this article interesting. The Android OS is moving up to second place now. I switched to an Android phone about a year ago and I really like it.

HTML5 seems to work better with flash and will be faster.

European Space Shuttle

VEHRA and VSH—the name of the new civilian vehicle—are both air launched, and "based on the X-38 experimental lifting body from NASA, for which Dassault Aviation had defined the shape." While VEHRA will have heavy versions capable of putting a 7-ton payload in low orbit, VSH is only designed to bring tourists into the edge of space, flying at Mach 3.5.
This is 22,000 pounds and looks really cool.

The black Wii console, which we already knew was coming, has today been officially revealed by Nintendo of America. It'll still be $200, and include not one game, but two.

Along with the Wii console, controller and nunchuk, the new Wii pack will include a Wii MotionPlus accessory and a copy both of Wii Sports and its sequel, Wii Sports Resort. We knew this too, but still, official details are always appreciated.

This isn't very revolutionary, but it looks cool in black.

It's not sleek and light-looking like the Gocycle, instead it's got an almost mountain bike appearance about it. Made with an aluminum frame, there are two models—a street version with a 250W motor, centrally-mounted, and an off-road version with a much more powerful motor, at 1300W—this model will be able to reach speeds of up to 43mph, with five motor speeds and 14 gears. Speed is dictated by how fast you pedal, which would seem very natural for first-time electric bike users.

This looks like a pretty cool electric mountain bike. I just wonder how much it will cost and when they will make it even faster.

Speeding tickets from space

As though cameras on top of every traffic light weren't bad enough already: there's now a trial run of satellites that will catch you speeding, over a several-block range, from hundreds of miles up. Hope for clouds, I guess? The SpeedSpike system is being tested at two locations in London, and works a little differently than your typical trap: cameras on the ground are assisted by satellites that are capable of calculating your average speed between two points. Which to me just means a lot of speeding, then going very, very slowly, then speeding, and so on.
This sucks for everyone. If you are speeding on the freeway at 2 in the morning and no one is around you could get a ticket.

Leaked HP Slate Gets Tepid Hands-On Response

If nothing else, the mini-review confirms the leaked specs we saw a few weeks ago: the HP Slate runs full Windows 7 on an Atom processor, has oodles of ports, front and rear-facing cameras, and a multitouch display. The main complaint over at Conecti.ca, in fact, seems to be the Slate's "long and annoying load time," which is a (unquantified) trade-off you would expect for being able to run a full notebook OS on a tablet. It seems more like a compromise than a straight-up drawback, especially when you consider that this was a prototype and likely not a production-level unit.
The screen looks really cool and has some pretty cool features.

Chaos is reigning across Western Europe today, with hundreds of flights canceled due to volcanic ash sweeping across the continent. The pulverized rock and glass from the Icelandic Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano is harmful to the engines of airplanes, apparently.

This sucks for travel, but it looks really awesome. The way the smoke was captured in this picture almost looks fantasy.

Pilotless Navy Helicopter catches speedboat

The US Navy's unmanned "Fire Scout" helicopter was out minding its own business on a trial run, when its home base warship detected a suspicious speedboat on radar. That's when Robocopter kicked into high pursuit—filming the whole way.

The subsequent three-hour chase finally ended when the speedboat rendezvoused with a fishing boat, at which time a U.S. Coastguard Law Enforcement Detachment unit from the USS McInerney swarmed. What they found: 60 kilos of cocaine, with another 200 kilos of narcotics presumed jettisoned. Oh, and all sorts of bad guy drug traffickers.

It is a cool idea how an unmanned helicopter was able to catch this speedboat. Technology gets better every year and it is just awesome.

Adobe Creative Suite 5 preorder

As expected, Adobe's Creative Suite 5 has officially become available. Including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash Catalyst and 11 more products, it's pricey—but reaming with the goods needed for any designer serious about their work.

New features in the flagship title Photoshop are Truer Edge which has better edge detecting technology, and of course Content-Aware Fill, which definitely looks like magic. Native 64-bit support for both Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects is big news too, for file processing alone.

Full release below, with prices—which start at $1,699 for the Creative Suite 5 Production Premium kit.

This is already being released and CS4 has only been out about one year. The upgrade price is about $700 which is not as bad of a deal, but I would not buy it for 1,700!!!

Samsung's Laptop Webcams 1080 HD

The CMOS sensors, by the name of S5K6A1 and S5K5B3, can both record 1080p video at 30fps, with the first model shooting on a 1.3MP sensor and the latter model a 2.1MP sensor. The ability to decrease resolution is included, for moments when your internet speed isn't up to par, and the 2.1MP sensor also has an EDoF, or enhanced depth of field function, for recording business cards so it can be translated into text.

This is awesome because barely any laptops can shoot in HD quality. Most are pretty low quality to be honest and this is a big step up for Samsung. Now they are making many cool new things like 3D TVs.

After one day on the market, the Apple iPad has been jailbroken. That certainly didn't take long, did it? It was only a matter of time, sure, but this was speedy even by most jailbreaking standards.

The break was completed by well-known iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd, who revealed today that he was able to jailbreak the JesusPad after a mere 24 hours of tinkering (so, we can tinker with the iPad?)

It is funny because it is already jailbroken. It was released and after 24 hours it was tinkered with.

LG LX9500 3DTV

They're saying it's the world's first full LED 3D TV, and while it's launching in Korea first, it'll be available in the US and Europe in "early May" in 47 and 55-inch models. This is the set which first leaked back in February, after LG accidentally shared its roadmap on Google Documents. It's slightly different to the LH9500 series, with a touted 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and LG technologies including TruMotion 400Hz, Pictured Wizard II, Spot Control, Infinite Sound, Clear Voice II and Intelligent Sensor, to highlight a few.

This idea is still cool, but it is very pricey. I would want one if I had enough money.

Almost perfect. In our previous tests, wireless iPhone charging usually came by way of an ugly charging pad and an ugly case. In this instance, Case-mate's charging pad is elegant and compact, but its iPhone case is really something. I'd say it's one of the very few cases that make the iPhone look better than it does naked. (That's high praise for me, a guy who never uses cases.)

PS3 uses 70 MB more RAM

When the PS3 launched, 120MB of its 512MB of RAM were dedicated at all times to the OS. (To put that footrpint in perspective, the Xbox 360's OS only used 32MB.) Luckily, Sony has refined their system.

Over the course of several updates, the PS3's OS has been weaned off RAM, its dependence cut to just 50MB—including the in-game XMB upgrade—meaning that an additional 70MB of RAM is available for game developers to use as they see fit.

No, that's not enough extra oomph to revolutionize the PS3 as a brand new console, but it's likely we'll see a slightly nicer lighting effect (or an equivalent) some time because of it.

Thinksound's Rain and slightly bassier Thunder earphones are made out of wood. These apparently have a good price. Though their MSRPs are significantly higher, at $100 and $75, respectively, you can find the Rains for $60 on Amazon, and the Thunders for about $45. In these photos, the Rains have the darker finish and black tips, while the Thunders have a cherry finish and white tips. I have my skull candy headphones for about 15 dollars and they have noise canceling and they are great.

This phone has Windows 7 on it, but that is about it. It does not look that cool. It does not have any new cool interesting things that have not been done. I probably won't want to get this phone. It was a cool idea though.

Leave it to a bunch of engineering students at Yale to design a crazy spokeless bike. It's not the first spokeless bike we've seen, but it looks a lot more like a real bike. It seems pretty cool since it is a different design. I wonder how well it rides.

Microsoft will not sell Xbox to military

The best graphics card out right now is the ATI Radeon HD 5970. This will be able to run almost any game on high settings at 1920 by 1200 ppi. However this is a pretty big sized graphics card and it would be hard to have a dual graphics cards. If your computer can fit this graphics card and you had a lot of money to buy it, it would be a good deal.
